Choosing '75 454 timing set

I have a 1975 standard deck 454 out of a '1975 dually pick up. The motor is smooth and in good shape but I thought while it was out I would go ahead and replace the timing set and put new valve guide seals in.

Is there anything I need to know about choosing a double roller timing set?

I have heard the smog motors had retarded cam timing from the factory. If this is true, how do I make it better? Will ordering a timing set for a HP 69 big block assure that I get improved or correct valve timing?

OK guys. Educate this old dummy!

John

timing chain

your point of retarded timing is unknown to me.. i never done a bbc. but one way to tell is pull the timing cover and ck the dots on both gears. crank at noon and cam a 6 is sbc. i'd also say a good double roller set is good.

Any BBC Mark 4 timing set for std rotation will work. No difference in them.

So, is the idea that the valve timing was retarded in the smog years a wives tail or was it built into the cam itself. If the latter is the case, would there be any advantage in a high performanc timing set that would allow me the advance the cam timing.
