Choosing a Camshaft and Gears!

Hello,
I am building a sbc 406. It has 10.84 compression and vortec heads. I have a problem though on choosing the right camshaft. I have narrowed it down to 2. Should I go with a 235/245 cam with 4.90/500 lift and use my 4.10 gears and have more low end torque? Or should I go with 244/254 cam with .510/.533 lift and use 4.56 gears and have more high end hp? I am thinking of buying like a around a 3800 stall converter and I have a th350 tranny. This is going into a 72 El Camino which is not exactly light. I would really like to know what you guys would pick to get the best E.T. I can out of my car!!!!

Thanks

Trent

I think you will be happier with the smaller to the two camshafts and the 4.10s. The 400 small block is inheritantly torquey and twisting alot of RPM is not it's forte. The Vortec heads make great grunt, the 3.75 inch stroke will bolster power also, so it makes more since to move the powerband down and enjoy the torque!
It will be much more driveable with the first combination

Hello,
Wouldn't going with a bigger cam give me more hp? And then with the 4.56's I would have good off the line power? Or Am I wrong about that?

Thanks

i would stick with the 4:10 gears, and stick with the smaller cam also, your vortech heads are stalled at .500 lift anyway so there is nothing gained by adding more lift, just more broken parts.. i think youll be happier with the first selection..

a wise hotrodder once told me that the best way to select cams is to pick the one you think you need, and buying one that is one step less racy... and it has always worked for me
