Choosing a paint and body shop...
I'm building a fiberglass Cobra kit car. I had planned on doing my own paint and body work. At this point, finding the time needed to do everything on my own is getting harder and harder. The doors, hood and trunk lid are mounted. All the trim will have been fitted and removed. How do I go about finding a good paint and body shop and how do I know if I'm being taken for a ride on the estimate? Thanks...
I am a full time custom painter with decades of experience. Here is my advice...
On the subject of cost, a repaint can run between $500 and $50,000 dollars. (Yes... I AM serious) It will depend on three things. How patient you are... how long it will last... and the way it will look.
For a cheap job, you can expect to get much worse than a "factory looking" finish... it will fade or lose it's gloss pretty quickly... It may develop problems with blistering, peeling, or shrinkage later.
Obviously, for the high end, you will get a job fit for a Lamboghini or a Rolls Royce, or even for an award winning show car.
Somewhere on the lower end of that range...lets say $5,000 to $10,000... you can have an experienced guy, using long-lasting materials, do a job that has close attention to detail, and very little chance of future troubles.
Usually good materials will cost $1500 to $3500, depending on color choice.... so remember when you get estimates, that will be a big slice of the cost.
The budget you decide on will pretty much determine the kind of result you will get.
Go to the local car clubs, and ask who does good work... is reliable... and that makes it an enjoyable experience. Those guys will tell you who to trust or avoid.
