Choosing a rear end for a swap ... TECH

Swapping rear ends is a fairly common thing in the world of Hot Rodding. A lot of folks get in trouble because they do not know HOW to properly measure a rear end for a swap. A lot of rodders just measure from the backing plate to the backing plate and end up with a rear end that does not meet their expectations.

You should ALWAYS measure the rear end from the wheel mounting surface to the wheel mounting surface. That is the true width of the rear end.

The reason to measure this way is because brake drum widths and brake drum offsets vary, resulting in as much as 2 and 1/2 inches TOTAL difference ( or more ) if you measured from the backing plates.
