chrome accent strips

Hello,
I have an '87 Olds Cutlass Ciera that has side black rubber molding strips with chrome accent strips. The black rubber part looks fine, but the chrome strip in the center is peeling and looks worse than the rest of the strip.
Instead of changing the entire strip, which would be a major hassle as it would peel the paint off from underneath , do you think I could just peel off the chrome strip and glue on a new strip in its' place?
Has it been done before?
I am not even sure the strip could be removed by itself.
I thought I would ask the Pros here before I grap a pair of pliers and start yanking on the strip and creating a big mess .
Thanks.
