chrome pitting

hey people whats the best way to remove pit marks in chrome plateing? i bought a used alt. off ebay it has a little rash on the side is there a way to remove it? without damage to the finish.

That pitting may be down through the chrome..but then if you buff the piece you may only have some small dark pits that are not all that noticeable..
