Chrome plastic grille
I want to paint over the plastic chrome coating. What would be the best way to do it? Can I just scuff it up really good and use a good adhesion promoter on the plastic before primer and flex agent in the clear? I've read that paint tends to easily chip off of paint on chrome but since it is not real chrome maybe I could get some better results. I've also considered painting over the chrome and then using the clear 3m film over the face of the grille that would be most likely to rock chip. Thoughts?

Dont do it !!!
I have tried to scuff up parts to paint and they never turn out as good as you would like. The paint always chips and if you get primers and layers of promoters and the paint it gets thick fast. Plus when taping i always seem to get some paint under the edge of the tape. Usually the surface on plastics has a texture and thats how the paint CREEPS in. I had a buddy send some parts off for vacuum metallizing. He said it came back great. Better than he expected.
Check this out. http://www.muellercorp.com/decorativechrome.htm Sorry i have no good advice on doing it yourself. Good luck! |
