chrysler 400 misfiring

I have a 72 newport, 400 engine 2 barrel carb, single exhaust. The engine would randomly misfire, shake and shudder under anything but light acceleration. Sometimes I would have to tap the pedal repeadetly to keep it from dying either from to much rpm or to little. The problem magically went away, then came back. I put new points on it and the problem was gone again, then it came back. Yesterday I put autolite 85 spark plugs in it and it didn't help. It has new cap, rotor, points and spark plugs. The wires looked fine. Some of the old plugs I took out were powdery white like it was running lean, but not all of them, some looked ok and maybe a little oily. Does this sound like detenation or misfire? What should I check next?

Could be a coil issue too, but also check out the carb/fuel system (plugged tank, filter, pump, fittings/lines, carb)

I know you just installed new plugs but you really need to install the Platinum plugs if the motor has alot of miles on it. I'm a firm believer in the Platinum plug for high mileage motors because I own a few of them.
