Chrysler HELP!

I'm hoping someone can help me quick. I lost the only sentry key to my 2001 PT Cruiser. The car is at the dealership now and they are saying that someone has changed the four digit code and that they need to put a $500 part on it....some kind of "stem"....that might or might not inable them to get a new key to work. I think they are simply trying to rip me off but I don't know. I need to tell them something pretty quick. Doesn't Chrysler have some kind of computer record system that should allow them to find out what the code was changed to since I'm sure it was done at a dealership by the previous owner? Doesn't someone make a device that will "crack" a code in a cars computer?
Thanks!

That doesn't seem right to me. For $500 they should guarantee it will work. I don't know a whole lot about it but I would try calling different shops to ask if that seems right. The ford dealer had to make me 2 keys for $130, $30 each key plus $70 to program them to the computer. I would think that a dealer should be able to plug your car in and program it but I could be wrong.
