Cleaning of 1950 Ford Fuel tank

I have been cleaning a fuel tank off a friends '50 Ford. I am getting sludge out of it now. What is the best way to get all that out without damaging the sealant?. I have been letting it drain out and clean it off.
could use some advice here.

Thanks
Tah

What sealant ?
Take it to a radiator shop and have them boil it clean. Then they or you can seal it.
