Post clear coat compatability

I'm restoring some Speedline wheels for my Porsche - I will test an area on the back of the rim to verify outcome. Can the clear lacquer be applied over urathane based clear coats? Or what can the lacquer not be applied over (enamels)? -
They are not in bad condition, but the clear coat is chipped in small areas, and has scratches that I wasunable to polish out. Stripping them is not an option as it will remove the OEM markings.

Your advice would be appreciated!

Why not use clear catalyzed urethane? Much tougher than lacquer, won't ever yellow and compatible with every base paint.

Thanks for your insightful response. I've actualy only had the "lips" ~1/2" refinished by a wheel refinishing company, they were reluctant to tell me what they were using - eventually they stated they were using a urethane based product specifically for aluminum. They stated it was not automotive/autobody type urethane. The final result showed no evidence of compatibility issues. I would like to refinsh the centers and was planning to use Wurth Clear Lacquer http://www.carcareonline.com/wurth_clearspray_11323.html

Is clear catalyzed urethane availbel in an aerosol?
