im running a devilbiss starting line 1.5 tip, and i have so far gotten great resaults. it shoots great for a nice wet base coat, but the clear goes on a bit heavy, im shooting omni high solids clear at 4:1:1 and im shooting at a range of 45 -55 psi and running full fan backed off about two turns seems to be set pattern for wet coat, and i have to run the fluid supply at about 5-1/2
turns from full closed other wise it sprays way to wet, less turns is to dry and would take to long to coat. no matter what speed i run. im looking for i guess a little more control. should i increase air psi or change tip size, and if its a tip size any suggestions. ( lowering tip size is what im thinking ) because recently i sprayed some of the same clear at the same mix out of my detail gun with a 1.0 tip and got a beutifull wet coat and it cured great no problems. this is why im thinking a smaller tip size. but i would like some suggestions.

1.5 is a little big of a tip for clear. Go to a 1.3or a1.4.

i did some looking and all thou its not noted on the tip it self on the box it says the finish gun is a 1.3mm tip, so this means that its a me problem. or a set up problem. i can get a nice coat out of it but to me it just seems too wet, but if i dial back the material it seems to spray dry, and im not moveing at a slow pace, ive tryed less material and slower movement, more material and faster movement. any ideas?????

If its just a problem with your clear try reduceing it. Anywhere up to 25% you have to kind of play with it untill you find what you like and where your gun setting needs to be. This lets your clear go on in thinner coats but be aware that you may have to put on a extra coat to get the mil thickness that you need.

if you're using a fast activator and the temp is already close to or above the range it is suited for, it'll dry very quickly and give you peel and/or dry spray. Make certain the activator you're using matches the temperature of the spraying time. Did that make any sense?

yes it makes sense, and i do do that i always use the slowest activator i can so the top coat has time to flow as much as possible.

ok so i took on this repair job and replaced a front fender and bumper cover etc. shot some dark grey epoxy went on beautiful nice and smooth except for the dust was attracted to the bumper for some reason. but i tacked as i sprayed no big problem. anyways epoxy went on great. on to base coat same thing great no problems went on like glass. blended great.
on to clear coat first coat mixed 2:1:10% per tech sheet. went on like absolute ****. it was spiting i only sprayed maybe a 1 foot section like this. the test shot sprayed awsome, ( yes one was done ) so i bumped the air psi to 45 pounds it some how got nocked down to 20psi. but still the clear coat came out very orange pealed badly. but just on a set of doors because after i did some last minute repairs i decided to just shoot the two doors and hard line it at the door seem. luckly the paint was a perfect match. any ways i put on like 3 wet coats even thou the orange peel was seen after the first coat, bye the way the bumper cover and fender min. orange peal, i figured that i could just color sand and buff, it sanded out nicely beleive it or not, but i broke threw on a couple area's, does any one know of a way to get these small spots that im going to blend in to dry super quick, the tech sheet says 16 hours to sand and buff and i have one day to make repairs and to buff the entire car. any tricks ( heat gun, adding more activator, act of god???? any help ) the area that needs to be colored and cleared is maybe a 3x 2' area and a small burn threw area on a rounded area of a door. but i have to get this car gone asap. please any suggestions. ( the areas are already wet sanded down other wise i would just say take the car ill spray this and buff it in a few days. i hat rush jobs. anyways thanks in advance

no more omni 161 clear for me, in my opinion its junk, and my jobber recommended it. then went it to get some clips told him that the clear came out so orange pealed that oranges were jelous. he tried blaming it on me and my set up blah blah, i told him that the sealer and base went on like glass, the clear was reduced up to 25 percent and still went on like snot tryed blameing it on my gun tip and psi. i told him my set up and my fix to the problem. and then decides to tell me that ppg just recently made a change to the clear and now it was not recommended for repairs. i put my hands up and said well that would a been nice to know since i told you what i was doing. now just to clear some things up. im not used to doing crash um cars. blending and stuff i know how but i dont do much i do mostly full jobs. so yes im kinda dumb when it comes to different clears for specific jobs. but now i know. but still omni 161 is now not going any where near my cars. the paint im happy with but that clear sucks.
