Clear urethane over acrylic enamel?

Please bear with me, I'am a beginner at this! I've only painted 2 motorcycle gas tanks with acrylic enamel metallic purple with the hardener, then clear coated them with acrylic enamel clearcoat ( with hardener), they came out pretty good! I now want to paint a gas tank with Acrylic enamel metallic blue (with the hardener) My question is after I spray the acrylic enamel blue on could I wait a few hrs. then clear coat with clear urethane with the hardener? the reason I want to do this I've been told that the Urethane buffs out much better and has a better gloss--thanks so much Dennis

hello if i was going to do a job like you are talking about here is how i would go about it . i would shoot the color w/hardener let that cure for a day or so wetsand it nice and flat with 1,000 grit leave it open in the sun so that you are certain all the solvents have escaped, and then shoot your clear over it you will be much happier with the finished product. if you are gonna have metallic or pearl in your color you may want to consider using base clear that way there wont be any issues with nibbing off the edges of the metallics or causing irregularities in the pearl when you wet sand .base clear may even be cheaper than the other route. just my 2 cents

Like fisher said waiting a day or more then wet sanding will give you a real nice finish as long as its not mettalic. I've done a couple bike tanks with urethane they turned out really nice you can even wet sand the clear after then buff it it will look awesome. Dont be afraid to put several coats of clear so you dont have to worry about sanding through it before buffing.
