closed drive line

Hi all
I started to pull out my old 216 on my 50 chevy truck 1/2 ton. I have removed the cross brace on back of the trans. and cant seem to get to the drive line to disconnect the 4 speed trans.

I have removed some drivelines in the past but nothing this old. Did buy the assembly manual but not getting a lot of info on removing the trans.or closed line drive line.

Could anyone let me know what would be the best rout to remove the engine and tranny. or how to disconnect the closed drivline and then maybe i might be able to pull the tranny and then the engine.or???

The closed driveline is a one piece unit that connects straight on the rear of the tranny.

I plan to use the same tranny that is in the truck , and replace the 216 with a 235 from a 52 chevy car.

Would appreciate any help thank you.

enclosed driveline

At the back of the trans, at the pivoting "ball", you will find 4 bolts that go into the trans, remove those 4 bolts. That will get it out, but it will take the U-joint out with it also. There are other ways, go to ChevyTalk.org, and to the 49-54 car column or appropriate truck forum. *************************

Try registering here and link to your vintage. Lots of help here for old chevies. They are restorers and should be treated with the sme respect you would like to be treated as they have been restoring for a long time and frown on any Chevies that are modified ,for the most part.

Thanks for the links and the info, I called a guy down in Arizona thats works for Casagrande parts, aparently he said cleaning the shaft behind the ball should allow for the shaft to slide back, I'll try that first and then go the other rout if need be.

Please us the PM system here to advertise parts and swap contact info, even if they are free parts.

What is the PM system

I am not that familiar with the lingo,"PM system" where should I post the comments pertaining to parts or responding to threads that are willing to part or trade a part.

If I can do you no good , then I can promise you I will certainly do you no harm.

Once you get it removed, you'll see that there's no big deal to it.

There's a cover plate that acts as the aft retainer for the closed drive ball and socket. Pull four bolts and it'll come off, exposing the u-joint. Pull the u-joint retainers like normal and the torque tube should be free.

Also -- pull the engine and trans as an assembly...the bellhousing acts as the rear engine mount. The trans will come off with four bolts, two inside and two outside the bellhousing.

If the old car parts company was located in Casa Grande AZ... it may have been Patricks Antique car and truck parts..

He has been there for decades

Yep, It was Patricks, guy sent me one of his broacher's good stuff.

Thank You for the info on removing the engine and bell housing together. I was looking at the set up and was trying to figure out how the engine was held on aft. of the engine.

Well i guess all i have to do now is crawl under her and shut up and work. I suspect more work will be waiting for me down the road good thing i am in it for the fun of it, still would like my truck to run.
