Clueless please explain

Electrical is not my strong point. Can someone explain what the difference is between IGN1 double lugs and IGN2 single . Or better whats goes where . This is the original or think so , switch in my 56 chev sedan.

Car has no wiring when I got .My kids bought me an "It's a Snap" kit for it. Directions stink . Where do I start

Doc here,

I looked up the IGN 1 and 2 up on a 56 (well actually a 57 Chev) Schematic..It does not show an IGN 2..just 1..

Put an ohm meter between the 1 and 2 terminals..see if you get a reading of 000, if so, they are the same terminal..If not, put one probe on the battery terminal, the other on the 1 terminal, turn the switch to on..should read 000, then read the 2 terminal, if infinite, turn the key to "Start" if it then reads 000, it may be used for a secondary Ignition (bypassing the ballast in "Start" directly to the + side of the coil.)

Hey Doc

Exactly as you put it below ...not the same terminal 2 goes to 000 when I turn the key it must be some kind if secondary circiut . I don't think am going to use it and will get a generic ign switch and keep this one on the shelf

What they're for

This is common on ignition switches for cars with "Points" type distributors.

One terminal goes to 000 on the ohm meter when the ignition switch is in the "on" position. This is the normal lug that sends voltage through the ballast resistor providing approximately 6V to the points during normal operation, minimizing arcing between the contacts as the points open and close and thus extending the life of the points.

The other terminal goes to 000 on the ohm meter when the ignition switch is in the "Start" position and this lug that sends voltage to the points when the starter is engaged, bypassing the ballast resistor, and providing a full 12V to the points resulting in a hotter spark.

Doc here,

Either can work, IF you want to Keep the OEM, just don't use the IGN 2 If you are running an HEI.
