Clues for removing pitman arm.

Any advice on how to separate a pitman arm from the steering box? (1981 F-150 box and arm). I've tried a pickle fork and medium sledge to no avail. I'm afraid of heat for fear of the lub, seals or internals of the box. And I don't have a wheel puller with claws that will fit in the space between the arm and the box.

Not to be too much of a smart *****, but how about using a pitman arm puller?

Removal

You will likely have to remove the fluid lines, steering shaft and then remove the steering sector from the frame. Then you can use a pitman arm puller and a impact wrench to remove the pitman arm.

If you don't have an impact wrench, sometimes the pitman arm puller can be attached to the pitman arm, tighten the puller bolt to the pitman arm shaft then strike the bolt with a 5 lb. hammer which may be just enough to break the pitman arm loose. Then you can remove the pitman arm with a 1/2" drive ratchet.

Yup, I've got several, one has adjustable arms and they always work for me. I don't own any pickle forks any more except the one that goes on my air hammer and I never use it, they just mangle stuff up too much and don't always work anyway.

Thanks Joe, I found one of those darn things cleaning my tool box, and for the life of me could not remember what it was for. now I can take some tape,put on it and write the name on it. Just in case I find it again and can't remember what it is.
