Clutch Chatter

Hello everyone,

I recently bought a 68 RS/SS with a 4 speed trans. When I start off in 1st gear the clutch chatters like crazy till it gets going. Also the pedal grabs a little on the high side rather than half way down. I contacted the previous owner and he told me the car has new clutch in it. Is there anything I can do to correct this ? and also is there a way to adjust the clutch to grab lower ?

Thanks in advance.

Some years ago (10-12) I had problems with Rayloc clutches from Napa, you could surface flywheel and it would rattle your teeth when you started out. Also caught about the top of pedal travel.
Had rayloc rep at my shop a couple times, He quit Rayloc a short time later, I just quit using them, or if a customer really wanted one put in, I would tell them we would install, but if it had to be removed under warranty, they would have to take it elsewhere, as Rayloc would not pay the full installation price that we charged.
I started using LUK, they were new units and not that expensive, compared to rebuilt, also they didn't even want a core back.

Last time I had some chatter, it was caused by loose bellhousing bolts...
You might wanna check and see if theyre all tight.

Make sure everything is tight and the rear main isnt leaking onto the clutch.
Improper installation or a bad flywheel can also cause issues.

Clutch Chatter

As posted above LUK make the finest clutches available,a buddy of mine owns a tranny shop and that is all he will use. Also dont be misled into buying a Centerforce clutch, they are farmed out to other clutch manufacturers,I know for a fact that some are made by LUK,who knows who else makes them!Another thing that could be causing your chatter is the flywheel itself,it might need re-surfacing or replacrment.

Years ago I had an 84 Z28 that I had the clutch replaced on. A buddy of mine ran the shop and told me that LUK were the best clutches so that's what they installed and I had the same chatter problem as this one. They changed the clutch on that car 3 times before the chatter was gone.
They called the Rep in to look at it and I believe the last one they put it was not a LUK.
