clutch/pressure plate install question
hey guys im getting ready to try and help my brother in law put a pressure plate and clutch in a 86 ford tempo,i really dont wanna waste my time with it becouse its a peice of s%@t,but its his ride so how much work am i looking at and is it a hard task, ive installed automatics but ive never messed with a manual trans.its a 5 speed with a 4 cylinder, thats about all i know right now.

also its a front wheel drive!! 12-30-2004 04:36 PM

First thing is after you get it apart you will need to get the flywheel resurfaced. Make sure the machine shop records how much was taken off the flywheel as you will have to make up the distance with flywheel shims if over .020". If this isn't done the clutch pedal will be too high or low. You should buy a "kit" with the bearings, disc and cover+ a pilot shaft to line up the disc. Be sure to install the disc in the correct position. Usually marked on disc. Clean any friction surfaces. CLEAN! Don't force the trans back into the disc. If it doesn't slip thru recheck everything and make sure the splines are lined up when you install. If you leave the trans in gear, sometimes you can turn the output shaft to align the clutch splines.

well, found out the engine will turn over and run...could it be something else possibly? cause it turns over and runs but just wont go into gear or go anywhere...

Let me get this straight, you were going to change the clutch because it wouldn't start?

An obvious muffler bearing problem.
