The 4.3 V-6 engine is essentially a 350 with two cylinders in the middle removed, and is similar in looks and measurements with the 283 you intend on using.

The only things I am unsure about is the measurements of the crankshaft flywheel mating surface, to transmission engine mounting surface.

With the newer engines having a one-piece rear main seal, and externally balanced flywheel being the only difference from the older engine's specifics, I cannot simply give a "yes it's the same".

One more question regarding these posts...

I found a bone yard near me that has a bellhousing (with complete insides) out of an 86 Camaro along with the T5 tranny and all the pedals and everything inbetween for a mere $150 (aledgedly good tranny). Lucky me!

A friend said that the T5s aren't all that stout and may not hold up to the HP of a built SBC or BBC. If this is true, how tough would it be to mount my trusty Muncie to that Camaro's bellhousing?

Thanks to all for everything!!!!

Lee

FIRST OFF WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO RUN THIS SETUP IN?? IF YOU ARE PUTTING IN A STREET ROD THAN SEVERAL THINGS COME INTO PLAY. (1) THE CAMARO BELLHSG TILTS THE TRANSMISSION 15 DEGREES FOR CLEARENCE IN THE ORIGINAL APPLICATION (2) THE T5 IS A FAIRLY WEAK TRANSMISSION AND WILL NOT STAND UP TO CONSTANT HOLE SHOTS OR ABUSE IN A FULL BODIED CAR. (3) THERE ARE VERSIONS OF THIS TRANSMISSION THAT WILL HANDLE 350 LBS OF TORQUE OUT THERE BUT THE CAMARO VERSION IS NOT ONE OF THEM . (4) PAY ATTENTION TO INPUT SPLINE COUNT AS THERE ARE CLUTCH ISSUES WITH SOME SPLINES. (5) I AM USING MINE IN A RESTO ROD THAT WEIGHS ABOUT 2000 LBS . A BASICLY STOCK 283 AND NARROW TIRES SO I DO NOT FORSEE ANY PROBLEMS. I WILL NEVER RACE IT. (6) DO YOUR RESEARCH ON THE T5 FOR YOUR APPLICATION A GOOD SITE IS "http://www.inliners.org/Jack/t5_page.html AND
http://www.5speeds.com/t5/-------- BOTH ARE A START FOR YOUR RESEARCH -------(7) BUY THE WAY THE T5 SHOULD BE THE EXACT SAME BOLT PATTERN AS YOUR 4 SPEED AND IT SHOULD BE A BOLT IN DEAL WITHOUT THE HASSELS OF A SHIFTER . NOTE THAT THERE ARE SOME T5,S THAT HAVE DIFFERENT POSITIONS FOR THE SHIFTER IE CAMARO AND S-10 VERSIONS -----GOOD LUCK -----GREG
