Clutch or transmission check?

I drive my car a lot, and on 2 occasion within the past couple months, I am shifting into 4th gear (at street speeds) and the gears grind like the clutch is not in. This is maybe one out of what seems to be a couple hundred times. Is this an indication of anything I need to do some preemptive maintenance on? Clutch adjustment seems right, transmission has sufficient fluid. Thought I better clarify this is a Muncie M-21.

clutch or trans

If you have no issue with any other gear selection other than 4th then you should suspect the problem is not a clutch issue.

You may want to crawl under the vehicle and have someone shift it into 4th, engine off of course, and make sure the trans is going all of the way into 4th.

It would be nice if you could correct this problem with only an adjustment.

Operator error. I do the same thing just about as often. Foot accidentally enters speedshift mode, hand does not.
