They are a nice machine. And fast!

We have one locally at a steel yard and I have made use of it many times.

They charge by the 'inch' of cut. How does your shop do it?

My experience has been don't cut the bolt holes- drill 'em. The plasma arc hardens the edges to the point that a drill bit will have a heck of a hard time getting through.

Cost effective nonetheless.

I just got this up and running this week. So I have not really come up with a good way to price these jobs. I will probably charge by the weight of the steel used plus a per inch charge. I am not sure just yet. It is amazingly fast.

I have had one for 10 years. I cut mostly ranch signs and entryway stuff. Will do some custom work for autos and shops from time to time. Its a sideline, so I rarely turn much down. I charged based on the dimension of the piece (total length x total width x thickness of material) plus design.

These rigs will spoil you. Also, I typically don't cut bolt holes out with the machine. Not only will it harden the edges, plasma will naturally have some deflection, so a drill is necessary to true it up. I typically will pierce a hole for the center, just so it transfers from the CAD file to the piece. Then a visit to the drill press.
