Post coil question

Howdy,
I got a pontiac 455 in a 65 ford f100. I changed my coil the other day and I noticed that the old coil had a little cylinder shaped thing I think might be a condenser attached to the clamp that mounts the coil. The new accel coil didnt come with one and the old one is toast. What does this thing do and do I need it with the new coil? It seems to run fine without it.

Sorry, wasn't paying attention, should have put this in another forum.

I think at high RPM' it grounds out for un-resisted ground for the coil to make higher volts at high RPM......My 88 Towncar has one on it.Steve
