Collector length?

Hi Everybody

I have been away for awhile... but I'm now online again.

Anyways.. I'm building a set of stainless headers for my big block camaro. All the primary tubes are done and welded to the header flange they are 2" in diameter and 33" long all within 2" of each other.

I'm planing on using 4" tubing for the collector and flare it down to 3" for the exhaust pipes witch will feature a crossover an two straight through mufflers.

but I can't find any info on how long I should make it .... any help will be greatly appreciated.

sune

4" is huge for 2" primaries. Anyway, length is from 12 to 18 inches usually.

I'm not sure the collector NEEDS to be 4", especially if you are 2" primaries, and stepping down to 3" eventually..?
I would go 12" or thereabouts, and I would use a spike collector if not a $$$ merge collector.
Is this a street car?

if you're asking about how long to make the collector which is what i think you asked ,the longer the collector the more tork you'll have if you say have a heavy vehicle.the thing to do is set up your pipes so you can shorten or extend them til you find the length where they run the best.i have 3" collectors and have a full size van so i made 2' collector extensions.i recently built a new motor the same size as the old one but ran 3" all the way back to the mufflers near the rear tires and have only started it in the driveway so far but seams to run quieter and smoother so far.i won't know til i get this oil leak finished and can take it out on the road.

ANYONE building headers should go to this site. Ed has the topic nailed and cuts through all the garbage mis-information out there. Get his $11 audio tape o the topic of header design. Invaluable on clarifying the voo-doo that seems to be associated with headers. He used to send this out in typed pages which is what I have but if the tape is anywhere as informative, it is the best hot rod $11 you will ever spend.

Thanks for your replies

sorry I wasn't to clear in my question.

I checked out that web site ... he seems to know his stuff. But my problem is that I would like to finish these headers this weekend.... So I think I'll use the 4" tubing as I planed ... Should I then make it shorter than 12 " or what?

I have uploaded some pictures to my gallery so you guys can see what I'm talking about.

Sounds like you are going for low end torque with those longe primaries so make the collectors ~12" to enhance bottom end. Idea is to isolate the organ pipe pressure wave to each header tube and a larger collector does that.
