Coloring vinyl?

I've been researching the knowledge base but found that some of the stuff there is rather dated and I'm not so sure that what I have is vinyl. I was given a complete center consul out of an identified car. It is flexible to the touch and feels like semi hard foam with a texture (you can push it with your finger and it springs back). Presently it is black in color, but there are places where you can scratch some of the black off which leaves an off white/grey color which is probably the original color of the material. What I'm wondering is how to refinish this consul. It is definately not the hard plastic that is found on the cars of today and so paint is out of the question. Any ideas?

What you have would be vinyl or flexible plastic. You'll have to remove all the flaking material to get a solid base for dyeing.

Here is a link that explains it: CLICK HERE

Thanks for the article. Looks like Sure Coat is what will fill my needs as this can be brushed on. My consul is already installed and too much stuff has to come off or be disconnected before I could spray it. Do you have any idea who handles the stuff?

It will be much easier if you take the console out of the car. You will be glad you did. It will be easier to get it completely clean and ready if it's not in the car. If I were you, I'd use Classic Coat aerosols. This stuff works great, and it will look like a professional job if you follow the instructions to the letter.

Here's a link to a good place to order from: VINYL PRO If you have any questions, they will answer them for you. Don't be afraid to call or E-mail them if you need to.
