column selector screwed up

HI all

in my 88 Chevy C1500 the auto shifter is screwed up inside. Something gave way inside and I would like to know how to fix it

I usually have to pull the shifter back towed my and down to shift and for each gear there where steps on notches that is would fall into

Now the steps and notches are gone the selector move freely up and down no mater where it is. I Have the top half of the column tore out and I can to figure out how to get any deeper. I have the part of the column removed that house the ignition and now there is a giant iron cone and I can figure out how to get it off

thanks
Michael
ps the tany will stay in a selected gear

The detent spring either broke (in the column) or the pin is stuck...?

If your not experenced with a tilt column (dissassembly) then I would suggest you take it to a shop or go to a salvage yard than get another one...?

Do a search here on the board. Willy's has posted a exploded view of one before. Maybe he could get you a copy.

Thanks that is what i needed. I found the info and got the rest of the column apart. Found out the Tip of the shift lever busted off and is not reaching into the notches

thanks
