comet won't idle in gear

okay so i was driving my 65 merc comet with a 289 and c-4. So i got on the motor and took it up to about 80 mph pretty fast.but when i stopped at the next stop sign it wouldn't idle. i was home shortly after and shut her down. then i started it to bring it into my shop. now it idles like crap and as soon as i put it into gear it instantly dies. i messed with the carb but got no results. do you guys thinks it's just a really bad vaccum leak or is it something worse.

Vacuum leak or the timing is off somehow.

You might have popped an intake gasket or the distributor wasn't clamped tight enough and it turned a bit when you stepped on it.

I agree with coldknock, it sounds like a timing issue.
Could be in the valve train. Pull your valve covers off and looks everthing over. Grab each rocker and wiggle it to see if anything has worked lose and you might want to have someone bump the car over several times to make sure everything is working the way it should.
And sometimes it's just the simple things; check your plug wires and make sure one hasn't popped off, and you might want to check your plugs.
