comp cams XE cams

i saw a thead where someone use one of the XE cams from comp and had all kinds of valve train noise, and then a bunch of guys replied with post, baching the XE line, i had plans on putting the XE274 cam in my 385 but now im second guessing my self, i dont want all kinds of crazy valve train noise that makes the motor sound like crap

is this a cam i should stay away from?

if so what are some other cams that will work well with a 385, cast crank, scat rods, kb 18cc dished pistons, 0 deck with 200cc/ 64cc/ 2.02/ 1.60 heads?

the car is 3450lbs with driver, street/strip, 4.10's with beefed up 700R4

Well I am going with a comp extreme energy roller cam in my 350 build and from what I heard they are really good cams and do good on power etc. I have one of the thumpr roller cams in one of my other builds and it does not make a bunch of valvetrain noise. I can't say but if you have good parts to match up with it such as rocker arms and springs etc it should not make that much noise but then again the xtreme energy line and other cams similar such as lunati voodoo cams etc they all will make the valvetrain clang and bang cause with them being performance type cams. I will post my results in a few months. I have not heard too many people complain about them.

there is a post within the last 2 days with 4-5 guys bashing them, talking about how much noise they made above 2000rpm, no one really had anything good to say at all, i still want to go with the XE274, based on the computer it's one of the best cams for a stroker (comp sim)

Well I am putting the xr 274 hr in my daily driver 350 build and my other motor is going to get the 288 xr xtreme energy cam. If it makes a little noise I don't really care the main thing I care about is it lasts and runs good with my setup and gives good response etc. I would go with it if I was you my daily driver is 224/230 @50 duration 502/ 510 lift and my weekend warrior will get the 288xr wich specs at 236/242 @ 50 with 520/540 lift. Its replacing the big mutha thumpr roller I currently have in my weekend warrior build. Try to read more in a goole search on the XE cams and see what others think. It takes more then a few peoples opinion to convince me.

yea i still think i will go with the XE274 the hyd flat tap spec at 274/286 230/236 .490/.490 110LSA 106CL

street/strip car

hopeing for 420-440hp and 440-460tq

I am running an XE274H in my 383 sbc. I don't notice any excess noise. Running this cam for the last 2 years, and I like it.

I like comp's cams. I have heard all kinds of comp bashing but I assumed it was a Ford vs Chevy type of argument.

I have a Comp XE268H in my BBC and love it.

Sounds like hooey or incorrect setup to me.

There has been internet propaganda that says Comp's cams are more likely to wipe flat because they use a softer core casting. An improperly broken-in cam would be more likely to wipe and cause noise, but I think its the whole Ford/Chevy debate. Someone installed a Comp cam, it wiped a lobe causing a tick, and the rumor started.

Many cam companies source their cams from the same foundry anyway and then just grind them to their own specs.

The point is, find the cam you want with the specs you want, and break it in properly. They will all serve you well... if you pick the right one

use zddp oil additive. www.zddplus.com

Some engines tend to make more valve train noise than others. Not sure why. maybe push rod length, lifter bore angle and roundness, valve guides and seats, ect.

Aggressive lift rates, like on XE cams can only make valve train noise worst. Plus, no doubt aggressive lifts will wear the lobe quicker or will make a lobe go flat easier if there are any other issues. (wrong oil, bad break in, lift alignment, ect).

So it may be ok or it may not. However, the chances go up for noise and lobe wear with aggressive lift rates.

I am running a luati voodoo camshaft And i really like it. the are a pretty aggressive grind but sit the valves down a little gentler than other cams. i have not had ant expiriance with comp cams. so i am not going to knock them. but thought i would throw the lunati voodoo line youre way. if you havent already checked them out..

my87z I would say that the performance of my XE cam is very good, I have ran my fair share of SBC's in my day and this the first time with a comp XE. Other than the current noise issue I am happy with it. I guess its a matter of opinion, my engine builder friend does not like comp period because he has had some go flat on him right out of the gate and once that cast material is in the motor/oil/bearings its time for a complete tear down to clean it up which was at his cost. He said that comp cams are not parkerized which is a hardening process, also on there web site he mentioned that they were offering to parkerize the cams for an extra 100 bucks? I also talk with other local folks who swear by comp.

As mentioned by another..as with any cam, install it correctly matching up and checking other associated factors and break it in proper the XE should do you well. Personally I am still searching for any mistakes I made with mine that is causing the noise issue. So far I am chalking it up to the aggressive ramp rates used on the XE line. My big mystery is why it only makes the noise once the engine has warmed up? Other than that the performance is very very good.

Not enough preload, if you set the prelaod with a cold enigne it reduces when the engine warms up- hence the difference between hot and cold lash on a solid tappet engine.

I have a big Extreme Energy Comp Cam in my 406 Pontiac motor. When I first got the car running the engine builder adjusted the valves like a Chevy because the Edelbrock aluminum heads. The cam & lifters made all sorts of racket.

I checked and he only went like a half a turn on the preload. I read the instructions from Comp and it clearly says one turn from zero lash. I went back and relashed everything to one full turn and the noise was gone and there was noticably more oil coming out of the pushrods.

I have not had a problem since. Made 346.1 horsepower at the rear wheels in my 69' Firebird. The engine is very stock beside the aluminum heads and cam.

Since then I have had to argue with several people about it. They keep saying the car will run better if I go back to 1/2 turn or less of preload. But I saw the oiling improvement with my own eye's and the noise disappeared. Its been running just fine for several years now since.

My cam specs are 240/246 duration @ .050" and .507"/.510" lift 110 LSA
