Compression test question - need oil?

Okay quick question. The donor motor I have for a V8 swap was drained of oil when I picked it up. I want to run a compression test on it to see if it needs torn down or if I can bolt on some different heads and go.

Would it hurt bumping it over with the starter for the duration of the test with no oil in the pan? I would think the residual oil would suffice but maybe not...

to oil or not?

I would use oil, buy cheap stuff as you are cranking it over at minimun 3-4 times for each cylinder, a lot of cranking without oil makes for needing bearings/crank and more.

You can probably get away without oil, but I still would put oil in the engine. This is why. You do the compression test. It comes out good. Pretty good, not just marginal.
Since the engine is out, may as well pull the oil pan, and at least check a rod, or a main bearing, visually, and/or with plastigauge.

There is a possibility the bearings are screwed up, because they ran dry. In spite of the good compression, you have to disassemble the engine, and replace the beatings, and at least polish the crank journals.

I am pretty sure 5 quarts of oil is cheaper than new bearings, and a whole lot easier to put in the engine.

I was thinking about this and I think tossing some in there would probably be a good idea

Didn't even cross my mind about the bearings! Good perspective. I'll be into the motor a little to freshen it up but you guys are right, no money for digging through the bottom end. This is for my girls car and I got my own project to finish up lol.

Thanks

edit: thought I would add it came out of a low mile granada and I helped drain the oil and the trans both were full and looked good.
