Post confused on casting# Help please.

Hello,
My boy and I are about to purchase a engine block and are unsure of the year? it says 14GM 3914678 and there are at least 3 different engines(302,327,and 350) with the same casting number. How can we find the year,327,350??Kind of car, 2 or 4 bolt main?? He says its a 350 but, he is not real sure now. Please help.
Thanks Mario and Tyler <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

There is an engine suffix code STAMPED on the front passenger side of the block deck surface, a little pad that sticks out. This information is stamped because it is more specific than a casting number. Go here to see some http://www.nastyz28.com/spmenu.html
A 302, 327 and 350 all could be built out of the same block with the proper combination of parts.
Sooo... you might find by the suffix code that it is a 302, BUT someone could have easily put a 350 crank and pistons in it to make it a 350 (provided it is a large journal block).

You can look up the code on the water pump tab inback of the alt.Should be a 3 letter code like CMJ or something. Also you could pull a valve cover and check the head #s.I'm almost possitive 302 and 327s didn't have large chamber(76cc) heads so that would be an indicator.Either way any of the three engines are good.

i ended up taking my motor with the same # apart to find out what i had. at the back of the block a # that is perpendicular to the cast # there is a date code. the first is a letter that is the month, second is a # which sould be the day, next the year. this block is also a 2 bolt main.

If im not mistaken you can at least tell the differents between a 327/302 from a 350 by the size of the harmonic balancer.the 350 has a larger one 8in. & the 327/302/283 is a 6in.hope this helps some (Wrenchturner)
