Connecting rod gaps

OK, so I built a 496 4bolt main with an Eagle rotating assembly. In all the books I have read, they call for a gap between the rods and the crank. I have set the gap however, the rods still slideback and forth on the rod journals. Is this ok? Why set a gap between the rods when the gap is not locked in?

This "gap" is there so the rods do not weld themselves together when the engine is running. As long as you have some clearance you are good to go.
