Console

I am pretty new to the board. I live in Indiana and I am a polie officer. I just wanted to post on here the progress I have for my 2001 Chevy Impala Police Car console. i know that it is not a "hotrod", but I have pulled many hotrods over if that counts. Anyway I just wanted some input of what you all think so far. I will be posting the finished product as soon as I get it done. In the pic there is my box that is the solid and the one with the whole cut in it is for a friend. I took the solid one and cut it to fit almost exactly to my radio, lights controls, and siren controls. I will also be making a box on the back to store my clipboard, PBT, and other various items. The lid will be in some kind of blue simulated leather, and padded. The whole thing will be carpeted in dark blue to match the interior. Thanks for reading, sorry that the pics are so dark, they were taken on my camera phone. Not bad for a $50.00 phone I think.

Welcome................I didn't know that police officers had to outfit their own cruisers, or are even allowed to. Don't they already come equipped with this stuff?

No not actually, the equipment is bought by the department, they do not come equiped. There are several companies likes Galls (http://www.galls.com ),that produce a console, but they are cheaper to make, and it is eaiser to customize. When a department buys a police car, it has nothing in it, but it is wired to make it easier to install your radio, lights, siren and things. They dont even come with the cage in the back, all that is bought separate. Actually they are quite bare, and everything is installed by the department. My department allows the officer to customize the vehicle any way he or she wants if it is a take home vehicle, which mine is. We then have several pool cars, and as long you dont over do it, you can customize those aswell, but it must be agreeable with the others that use the vehicle, if any. Thanks for your reply.

What did you make the consoles with? What type of material? BTW I am also a police officer, in Georgia. We use the plastic consoles from Galls.

Finished console

I finally finished the console I was telling you all about. I carpeted it, ordered some great cup holders from the place Krist suggested, built a box to hold my clip board and other equipment. I mounted my cell phone, radio mic with custom holder, flashlight and P.A. mic all on the box. I padded the lid of the box with 3 inch thick foam, covered it in Royal Blue pleather, and carpeted it. The whole console is actually 2 pieces, one being what holds the radio and things, and the other is the storage box. I have to give my hat off to all the custom shops out there, because in experience carpeting a box is one hell of a heartache. I said I would post pics when it was finished, and here they are.

Here are pics of the console from the right side, and of the inside of the box. The mic stand itself is custom made from a machine shop in a town not too far from where i live. The original box that was in the car came with a short mic stand, the one on the left what my cell phone holder is attached to, due to the size of the foam and the height of the storage box, I needed it to be about 2 inches longer. So I spoke with my girlfriends step father who works in the shop, and he made me the holder. He was even nice enough to powder coat them for me. I also included a picture of the car to see what this is all going into. I would like all comments, good or bad, that anyone has to say. I thank everyone for there time in advance.

One more thing, to answer a question that was asked. The whole thing is made out of that fiber board stuff you get at Home Depot. It is not real hard to work with, and if anyone needs I also drew up a kind of a blue print for the console. So if there are any other officers out there that need a box that fits a 2001 Chevy Impala, then let me know and I will send you the drawing and measurements. It can be modified fairly easily. I have made some with 18 inch storage boxes, and some with 16 inch storage boxes. It all depends on the length of your clipboard, or whatever you want to store. The whole thing cost about $30.00 bucks to make, give or take.

A little off topic but in West Siloam (about ten miles from me) they used to have two Impala SS cars(that's one for each gas station! ). Boy, those are hard to spot as a cruiser.

Lawful Console

Blows my mind...The Department I worked for was very strict about officer add on equipment...Mostly would extra wig wag lighting, but I don't think they would ever allow custom consoles...Too much concern over air bags and liability....We liked to never have found a laptop bracket that passed the test....
