Buy the valve body and related parts from TCI, Hughes or other. That's the only sane way to try unless you're a trans wizard. You CAN do it in the truck.
The biggest problem could be installing the plug where the modulator used to be. You will want a new shifter with some type of gate as most all manual valve bodies are reverse pattern.

how do i know what it is reverse pattern or Forward. tranny out off 1976 caddy thanks

Every factory trans is forward(standard P-R-N-D-2-1) but the manual valve body is reconfigured to be P-R-N-1-2-3 so in race situations where you might get a little twitchy, you're shifting away from neutral, not toward it. That's the difference/advantage.

Full manual shifts on a T-400 can be forward or reverse pattern.

You need to decide what you want and check for costs and / or shifter changes for reverse pattern depends on shifter you have or will purchase
