If you want a convert, buy one.
I would agree with Brian. I am converting a '54 Chevy 4dr sedan into a 2dr retractable hardtop, and while there is a valid argument that I should have started with a 2dr hardtop rather than the sedan, it was a question of what was available to me.
However, I couldn't just buy a retractable because Chevrolet never made one, that's the whole point of my build is to end up with something along the lines of a custom Chevy concept car that never existed.
I probably wouldn't put all the time and energy into building it into a convertible unless it was a case of an original convertible falling way out of my budget, and I was desperate enough to have one that the work involved in the conversion became justified for me.
In the end, only you can make the decision, it's your car, you will be the one doing the work and so only you can decide if the ends justify the means. Sure, consider people's advice and ask questions but don't let it put you off doing something you really want to do.
