converting vertical shaft to horizontal clutch

Hey, this isn't specifically about hot rods obviously, but it is about a gokart project I have. I have a lawnmower engine that has a vertical shaft, and I have it nice and clean its about 3/4" wide but the problem is wheels don't work spinning in that direction. I am lost on how I can change the direction of the power 90 degrees. I have the choice between either belt or chain drive. If anyone has any ideas they'd be greatly appreciated, I am only in a brainstorming phase right now. thanks for all your help. - DAno

DO NOT lay a vertical engine on its side to change shaft orientation.
Maybe it'll work maybe not, that is until the engine runs what oil is left on the crank off the journals and siezes, or worse yet blows parts out the side of the crankcase.
A belt would be the cheapest and easiest way to change drive and driven orientation, my lawn chief garden tractor has a vertical engine and a horizontal transaxle pulley driven by a belt that is twisted over a length of about three feet and uses a pair of guide pulleys on the backside of the belt for support.
My ford lgt-100 garden tractor uses a shaft drive from the front-to-rear horizontal engine to the right angle gearbox, then from the left-to right horizontal output of the gearbox by belt and pulleys directly to the horizontal input shaft of the transaxle.
You could pick one of these right angle gearboxes any place that sells and services garden tractors.
OR
Look that part up here:

There ARE cheaper units out there, but this link will show you basically whats out there.

You cannot run a vertical shaft motor with the shaft horizontal. The horizontal shaft engine is oiled with a dipper that is attached to the connecting rod. It splashes the oil that is in the bottom of the case to lubricate. I am not sure on the layout of the dipper for lubricating a vertical shaft motor, but would bet that it isn't set-up for splashing oil from the side of the case.
