Radiator needs to go, get a 4 core or a 2 core alum. Is the shroud still there? If not get one.
The electric water pump should be replaced with a belt driven one if running on the street, they are made for race apps. May need a bigger fan also. |

I agree with G T A I've got 67 firebird 428 HO is
450 hp your radiaor is to small. 2-cores are for smaller motors, automatics, just completely different. up grading your radiator to 4-core ,flex fan, spacer to bring fan close to radiator, schroud, and upto a 195 degree thermostat,your electric fan might work, depending on if pushing or pulling. I've had your problem with my 428 till I incorperated the changes.One small reason not to build up a motor, The radiator is often the colperate after a build up. |

As mentioned before, definately more cores needed in the radiator. I'm running a four core in mine, same dimensions but added cores. I would normally go with a 180deg. t-stat., a good shroud and fan, and a belt driven water pump. The fact that you really have a problem idling leads me to believe that for whatever reason you're not effectively pulling enough air through the radiator to cool the fluid and running hot even while driving could be helped by increasing the coolant capacity with a four core radiator.

I agree with all that was said and get rid of the electric fan. Sounds like you have enough info from rodders that have gone thru the same as the rest of us. Heres a site from another rodder, its for cooling problems.

Lets get some priorities set here before you blow alotta dough unneccessarily.
1st- make sure you have a proper fan shroud (if not find one and get it in there) 2nd- replace the waterpump and fan with factory units (I prefer clutch fans however flexfans are also good) 3rd- go to a 185 or 190 thermostat 4th- replace the radiator with a larger capacity unit (some shops can recore yours with extra fins which do better than extra tube rows) Try these one at a time and you will find your cooling problem. To many changes at once will not pinpoint your problem and you wont learn what to do the next time you do another project good luck |

Just a quick thanks for the guys or gals that replied to my post re: cooling problem. I changed the thermostat to 180*, had the 2 core built up to 4 core high desity (more fins and cores),and new 16 pound rad cap. After 30 minutes idling, and 30 minutes driving moderately never went over 190*. This has got to be the best forum going, and its people like you that take the time to answer that makes it so good. I hope I can help someone sometime. :p
