Cooling System-Open System vs Closed System

What is the difference between an open cooling system and a closed system? On my Luv, I need for the radiator to burp coolant into the overflow tank, and draw it back in when it needs it. Which system do I need, as I know I have to buy the right cap for that to work. Thanks!

Instead of puking coolant out the hose onto the ground in an open system, on a closed system it drains into the reservoir, and then gets sucked back into the rad on cooling.

You have to have a Recirculating/Overflow Catch Can ...(Not just a catch can)..

Okey dokey, thank you all, that cleared that up!! The catch can I'm using is a recirculating type, so says the Summit guru!

My 1922 antique model T racer has an open system, no pressure cap and if it gets hot it spits out coolant. A pressuer system increades the cooling efficiency.
