Should use a melonized steel gear.

A mod you can do is on the front side of the distributor housing is to grind a slot about .030 deep straight down. This will allow the oil in the valve train that`s draining back to flow down on the gear itself, providing it more lube.
We did this on a friend of mine`s ride that`s using a comp roller cam and a stock HEI gear. We inspected the gear every oil change for the first 15,000 miles, when we seen very little wear we haven`t bothered to check it since. Make sure the slot faces the front of the engine so it doesn`t interfere with the oil passage the distributor blocks as this will cause oil pressure problems. You can do this mod with the aftermarket gears as well which will give them a longer life. With synthetic oil the gear will last even longer.
