correct finish for front end?

I have just removed my front end for cleaning/painting whilst the rails are being sanded/painted, see photo.

Question is, what finishes are the most appropriate?

The car is a '29 highboy being finished in a fairly old-school style. white walls, genie shifter etc etc

I had played with the idea of finishing the rails in a satin black which possibly looks a bit new school but I am stuck when it comes to the front end. Were the rails typically just a plain gloss?

Any suggestions? maybe black glosss for most components and red (the engine/trans is red) for the steering/suspension rods?

I do understand that anything goes and therefore the answers I might get are "whatever you prefer!" EXCEPT I am trying to achieve an old-school 50's built look so there is a period correct answer, make sense?

Thanks for any input.

Just a suggestion but how about gloss black with red pin strips, black is pretty much old school color, and I have seen them white but don't care much for that look.

Nice car

Thanks guys!

I think having seen one rail in satin black it really does give me the look I want AND look clean at the same time. I am using red as a secondary color (black and red, how original!) and think that the brake discs etc will be highlighted with red.

Thanks for the input!

correct finish for front end?

A lot of the finished cars had black dropped axles with the indent painted red. Other components were black or red and they were often pinstriped. What color/primer are you painting the body?

in my opinion, i think rods look best with a semi gloss chassis, and flat black suspension.

the reason?, because you spent ALOT of time on the chassis, and you want to highlight it.

if you paint your chassis a flat black and your suspension gloss, or even semi..
you suspension will stick out.

so what do you want people to see more?

ive done a few projects where the chassis is black and the suspension is the same color as the engine, to me... this dont look right. plus the paint chips
and looks like hell a year or two of driving it.

another thing to remember is that your suspension IS a part of your chassis, you could paint it the same as your rails and it would look more uniform.

if your into high matainence you can just blast the frame , leave it bare metal and hit it with WD-40!!!! i see you already have a can avaliable.
but i wouldnt suggest it on a arc/or mig welded frame.

another suggestion, colord suspension looks better on a suicided front end.

I suggest POR-15, an epoxy paint that is mostly indestructable. It comes in colors and satin.
