Correct flex plate install on sbc with T-350

I have a new flex plate for my rebuilt SBC with TH350 and want to ensure its installed correctly. I think it's backward now. There are recesses in the flex plate that look as though they should protrude out toward the lug of the torque converter. Right now the protruding side faces the engine and when I slide the converter up against the flex plate there is a gap between the lug and the flex plate, the gap being the same as the depth of the recess. Do I have it backward? Thanks for your help.
