welding in plates
The best way I have found for doing this is to cut out the offending area, weld a lip of flat stock on the back side, then weld a plate cut to fit inside the area I have removed. This will make a flush patch on the outside, or visible area. You then need to grind down your welds flush with the face of your frame. If you have any small pinholes left, simply fill them with body putty and then sand smooth. I would also weld the patch on the backside, to the lip you welded to your origional opening.
