corrosion to chasse

Hi I am new to this form. I am 18 and from the UK. I am just starting my first project which is a 1932 Ford coupe. I’ve stripped it right down to the bare chasse which was quite a job. The chasse had a lot of body corrosion and rust holes. The thing I am having the problem with is the holes. I have to weld a plate over the hole but I don’t want the plate to stand out from the chasse. I’ve had an idea but I don’t know weather it’s the right I idea or no.

If I put the plate inside the hole then pull its against the hole the weld around the inside of the hole. Grind back the weld and then use filler to bring it back flush with the chasse. If this is the wrong way to do it, any ideas would be great thanks Matt

welding in plates

The best way I have found for doing this is to cut out the offending area, weld a lip of flat stock on the back side, then weld a plate cut to fit inside the area I have removed. This will make a flush patch on the outside, or visible area. You then need to grind down your welds flush with the face of your frame. If you have any small pinholes left, simply fill them with body putty and then sand smooth. I would also weld the patch on the backside, to the lip you welded to your origional opening.
