Replacing the seal is fairly easy = Drop driveshaft, remove pinion yoke, R&& seal, and put it back togather.. BUT the car is 28 years old and has 74,000 miles on it... Any shop that backs up its work has to a complete rebuild to cover it's ***. As a shop owner in the past, I feel for you!! It's a damb $3 seal, But as soon as you open up unit it will somehow turn into the worst bucket of worms on the planet! The end result is hurt fealings, and an unhappy experiance. My best advice is to get with your friends and replace the seal, If it works, Fine. If it doesn't, suck it up and take it to the shop. Good Luck. Pony.

You have a pinion seal leaking and that is all. You DO NOT need an overhaul. Find a shop that will just replace the pinion seal.

My Gratitude Kind Response...

6-8-06

It's Like Who Do You Trust--You Learn Know Alot About Cars/Trucks/Corvettes!

Corvette Limited Slip (Positraction) More Complex -- Cramp Closed Space --Even Hanging Down On Rack-- Factory Set Up,i.e.If I'd Drag Raced 28 Years--End Yokes Loose Bearings Worn.

Forgot: Past Year Con Dealer Kept Corvette 3 Days Hopes Dis Assembling Rear End Replace Pinion Seal--Could Not Remove Rear Yoke--Lied About Lubricating Vette, Gear Oil --Tried Keep New Oil Seal & My 2nd Set Keys-- Filed Credit Card Dispute (Got $ Back) Almost Punched Him Out!

See Spec Sheet Dis Assembled Corvette Positraction Rear End -- Those Never Seen Under Side Older Corvettes...

Again, Thank You All ...

Just using the word "Corvette" in front of anything adds $$$ to the price. The actual gear assembly is just a standard GM posi unit but everything else is strickly Vette and scares a lot of people. I rebuilt my 74 from a bare frame up and it Was an Experience! It did take a 3/4" drive Tee Bar and 6' of pipe for a cheater bar to break the pinion nut loose. So breaking that nut loose can be a *****. I would still try to just replace the seal. The rubber in them gets hard with age and IF you don't have any other issues with the rear (gear wine, clunks, ect) I always go with the old addage "If it ain't broke don't fix it". Good Luck. See my album for pics of the rebuild.
