cost of boring an engine

hi guys does anyone know how much it would cost me to bore out a 350 chev and put new oversize pistons? really i'm just trying to get an idea if i'm better off to get a long block and and junk yard engine and compile parts or bore the junk yard engine. local carquest quoted me a long block at $1300 with $300 core. thx

Its usually cheaper to buy it as a package. What type of pistons?

Not many good things have been heard about auto part store engines....Auto Zone, Car Quest or others. A guy near me with a '32 hiboy didn't want to go to the "trouble" of building his own and bought a long block from a NAPA store....BIG mistake!!!! ran like chit, smoked like a battleship, rings never seated, yada.....There's guys on here that buy the newer truck Vortec roller 350's from the boneyard and say they have good runners. I'm sure one of them will be along with more info on that.

My local machine shop charges here in Kansas City...
Bore $25 per cyl
Hone $8 per cyl

But you want new pistons so they are going to have to press the wrist pin out
$7 each rod
------
$320

They will likely charge you labor to file fit your new rings too.

If you bring the shortblock they will likely charge you to disassemble and reassemble the rotating assembly as well.

They will charge you to rebuild the rods as well (something like $7 a rod if IRC), which is a great time to swap the OEM rod bolts with ARP bolts.

A long block for $1,300 sounds pretty cheap. You get what you pay for, and pay for what you get. Is this for a daily driver or performance?

If performance and installing new pistons, you really ought to balance the rotating assembly, $225.

Plus clean block. plus crack check. plus r&r cam bearings/soft plugs.

thanks for the replies. i'm not planning on super high perfomance, i just want something reliable. what do you say about a company that bores 350s and sells them as long blocks for $950 + shipping? i forget the name.

here's the website: Chevy 350 engines - Remanufactured 350 engine, GM Chevrolet Crate & Rebuilt Engines

If you forget the name they probably are not worth remembering. A well build stock engine is not much cheaper than a hipo engine, quality parts cost money, good machining is not cheap.5 to 600 for a block to get machined is fair(clean/bore/square/deck/align hone/new cam bearings/new frost plugs) some people just wash the blocks and bore, nothing else

g.m. long block 350 1500.00
