Cougar Saginaw Steering

Hi everyone my question is:
in my 72 Cougar I have a Saginaw steering box. I had a lot of sloppy steering so I replaced it. Now I need to know what would be the proper amount of steering wheel turns from lock to lock?
A shop manual says, "should be 17.5.1 for 4 turns lock to lock". Well does that mean 2 turns to the left and 2 turns to the right? This is what I have now 2 to the L 2 to the R. Can anyone answer this question? Thanks a lot.

If I may can I throw in another question?

The steering box I put on my Cougar has a tag number on it of, "SPB-AE"
I have searched high and low for this tag number with no luck I need help here.
I got the box from John's Classic Cougar in Holland Mich used.
Other numbers on the housing are, 78083 (or maybe 780630), 257 and 7812145. This box looks the exact same as the one I took off.
I will take emails, jdcron@wmis.net. Thanks.

4 turns lock to lock. That means from straight ahead 2 turns left untill it hits the stop and after you return to center 2 turns to the right untill it hits the stop.
If that is what the shop manual says then you are good. Some cars have a "sport " or "Quick" ratio and it takes less revolutions of the wheel to get to the full radius of the turn designed into the steering.sport or quick ratios usually are around 2 3/4 or 3 1/4 lock to lock

casting numbers ?

a lot of different parts can go into the same casting. Just abcause the casting bolts up doesn't mean it's the right one. I remember when they sent in a pallet of mercury steering boxes to the truck factory everything bolted together but when the guy at the end of the assembly line started up the truck it went left when he turned to the right. dodge pickups and chrysler car used the same casting and the same thing happened when someone mis- labeled a pallet of parts.
