Covering Armrests - Dantwolakes Alert!!

These are the armrests that I am using for my door panel project. They are a fibereglass construction with a gelcoat finish. I want to do a layer of Volara 1/4" foam on the top surface. Then cover them in a Whisper faux leather, it has a 27oz. weight.

What steps would I do this in?

I generally pad these types of things with 1/2" re-bonded foam ( like carpet padding) and then cover that with 1/8" sew foam with the back side up. The Volara foam would also work under the 1/8"sew foam. The sew foam lets the vinyl slip better and it's easier to get the vinyl tight.
You can't do the cover with one piece of vinyl. If it was me doing it, I would cut a piece to match the top, cut out for the pull area and sew a piece into that spot. The area from the top edge down would be a separate piece, and it would have to be curved to take up the slack from the extra vinyl. The seam would then be either top stitched or French seamed.

That's how the armrests in the pictures were done.

Thanks Dan, always appreciat your advice.

I have no sewing machine so it looks like I will end up having to take the armrests into the Interior Shop that did my headliner for me.

So much for a Do-it-myself project!!
