Cracked 5.0 Head

I recently discovered an issue with the intake valve on my #8 cylinder.
I brought the head to a local shop this morning. It looked like an easy fix until he found there was a crack on the head between the intake and exhaust valves.

Is this common? What would cause it?

Common. Caused by heat. GM thin castings. Something is causing that cylinder to run hot or the vehicle has been overheated in the past.

Crack usually starts at exhaust seat and migrates to intake seat, spark plug or the nearest coolant transfer hole. Intake valve burns because it can't dissapate heat due to cracked seat.
