cracked starter bolt hole on block
help....
I was just about to bolt in my starter in my recently built 383 sbc and discovered this little problem. This is the outboard hole that one of the starter bolts goes through. I can see a hairline going into the threaded area. Any ideas on how to fix this? Or am I screwed? The motor has never been started, and I have a LOT of dollars into this block for machining and parts and really want to avoid pulling it or starting over again.. fezz-man,
What I did on my engine when I found this same problem was to grind out the crack as far down as I could. Then I magnifluxed the crack so I could find the ends of the crack. I then drilled a small hole into the ends of the crack so it would not keep going. Then I use a wire feed welder with .035 stainless steel wire and a tri-mix gas. That is Co2, Argon, and Heilum. I also installed a stud in the hole so as not to plug the hole with weld-metal. I then welded the crack and then using a chipping hammer I beat the weld to relieve the stresses. I let it cool and then put the engine together. It has been running without any problems for just over four years now. Good Luck Scholman |

Thanks Scholman,
I thought you can not weld cast iron. Is this really possible? I was thinking of filling the hole with jb weld and inserting a stud. This of course would do nothing to fix the cracked piece. I am sure the cracked piece will break off when i apply any pressure to it and leave the threads useless. |

A stud won't work with the trans/bellhousing in place. I suppose you could just remember to bolt the starter up before install.

mine is cracked
I have been using mine cracked the same way as yours for three years.
I noticed the crack when a starter went bad. Folks will say the block is trash I said ok,and bolted the new starter on ,and have been crusing ever since. you always have the option of fixing it. |
