i need to know what the smallest main and rod journal diameter would be ok with stock bearings

2.45 and 2.10 are stock diameters

how do shops check these? just with a pair of basic calipers ? or ?

they are checked for size with micrometers. The finish is also checked mostly by feel. The machinist then will either polish the journals, or turn them undersized to either .010 .020 and .030 being the max.

A Strip of Plastigage,+ alittle Test Fitting on your engine stand will tell you whether you need Slightly Undersized Bearings......

If the journals are still mirror smooth,+ Round,..... you can get bearings at .001/u, I believe.......
