Crankshaft Coalition Wiki: new hotrodding articles

It looks like our wiki is really taking off. A wiki is an online encyclopedia that anyone can edit. Our wiki is an encyclopedia of hotrodding articles. Here's the full list of articles that have been entered so far (newer ones towards the top of the list):

Also, thanks to our wiki contributors. You'll notice that wiki contributors have a "barnstar" image next to their username (like the one next to my username in this post). "Barnstars" are wiki images that symbolize "barnraising": coming together to help a community achieve a specific goal. They were found on older American barns, both as a symbol of the barn-builder, and as the end-points of steel structural supports. Here's a list of our wiki contributors, in alphabetical order:

1931 steve
astroracer
cboy
CrashFarmer2
grouch
Henry Highrise
home brew
hotrodkiwi
Jon
kringold
Lonestar
lowROLLERchevy
matt167
Nightfire
OneMoreTime
pepi
pmeisel
Rob Keller
robs ss
Siggy_Freud
T-bucket23
WakBordr7387

If you've contributed to the wiki, but you don't see your name on the above list, it's probably because you haven't yet registered a wiki username. Registering a wiki username is a 10-second process. You only need to type in 2 things: a username and a password, nothing else. You can do this by clicking the "create an account or log in" link at the upper-right hand corner of any wiki page.

For more info on the Crankshaft Coalition Wiki, see this short guide: 8 sentence quick-start guide.

Hey Jon,
I was up last night at 3 am suffering the after effects of my 11:30 PM pastrami sandwich and I made a contribution to the wiki.

Cadillac engine page on wiki just added....

I added all of the text from my 'Doc's Caddy Knowledge' page on my Angelfire website to the wiki, with engine specs, swap info for cars and 4x4 trucks, how the factory EFI works, etc. Covers all engines from 368-500 CID and from about '68 to early 80's...

I also added how to remove glued-in windows with windshield removal wire and handles, and some tips I learned...

What about information that may be copyrighted? How do you enter that?

As long as you enter info of which you have some personal knowledge you should be fine..At least tha tis how I look at it..Copy bombing would probably be removed or edited..Since any registered user can edit a Wiki I do not think any copy bombing would last very long..

Just my thoughts..

Also, I made a few corrections on FORD ENGINES. What if one comes across entries he feels are not correct or subject to dicussion?

Is this wiki germane just to this board?

Thanks for the contributions KULTULZ -- added your barnstar to your username.

The wiki is germane to this board, but not exclusive. Anyone can edit it.

If you come across an entry that needs correction, then correct it -- the sooner, the better. This includes factual correction, as well as grammatical. The power of the wiki is that hundreds, or even thousands of people can edit one article. Some may add paragraphs of information, some may add a single comma.

If you come across an entry that needs major correction, or otherwise warrants discussion, then click the "discussion" tab at the top of the article page. Start a discussion for that article, just as you would start the article itself. Each article has a relevant discussion section. If a consensus can't be reached for a specific article (as is often the case), both sides can be presented within the article.

Regarding copyright -- copyrighted information or photos can NOT be entered into the wiki. It has to be all original works, stuff in the public domain, or stuff published with the permission of the copyright holder. Essentially, the same rules that apply to posting on the board. However, keep in mind that some information can not be copyrighted. In our realm, this will most specifically apply to numerical information (lists of engine firing orders, RPO codes, etc.).

Short answer: You don't, unless you want the copyright owner to have a whole bunch of your stuff.

Longer answer:

Copyright applies to expressions, not ideas. Even your expression of those two questions is copyright protected, with you as the copyright owner. That protection will last until 70 years beyond your death. The only way I can get away with copying it here without your explicit permission is because it is clear that quoting comments is a normal function of this system and your participation in the fora therefore grants an implied permission to quote you.

The way a factory service manual presents, or expresses, the information about a car is (almost always) protected by copyright. Permission of the copyright owner must be obtained before duplicating that expression. Penalties are severe if the copyright owner chooses to impose them. The factual information itself is not covered by copyright. Some of it may be covered by patents.

What this means, for practical purposes, is that you cannot legally copy and paste, nor scan and OCR, nor otherwise duplicate the contents of manuals, websites, brochures, books, pictures, etc., without first obtaining permission from the copyright owner. You can express the facts in your own way, just make sure it isn't close enough to the original to make some ambulance chaser's ears perk up.

If you are the author of a work, you are also the copyright owner. DrChop had the right to copy his own work from his website to the wiki. If I had done that, I would be infringing on his rights under copyright law. Now that he has placed his work on the wiki, I or anyone else may alter it, there, without worry. That does not grant permission to copy and paste his original work, from his website, to anywhere else. Copyright protection remains in force for that expression, unless he grants explicit permission otherwise.

All of the content of the wiki (the particular expressions of information found there) is also copyright protected, with the copyright owner being the Crankshaft Coalition. However, the copyright owner grants specific permissions (license) for others to use that content under certain conditions. Each page of the wiki contains a link to the license and conditions.

(Just in case there are any badboyz reading who think they can sabotage the wiki by copying and pasting, I suggest they read a little about the limitations of liability. Such a scheme would backfire with heavy consequences).
