Way back (69 or so)we used a crate 302 chev for our junior fuel dragster. These were emensly popular back then for JF. They were very cheap for what you got. You could not build as nice of short block as what you got from GM. They would take 90% nitro all day unless you leaned it too much. haha
As a side, my bro in law bought a new 68 302 Z-28 with 4.10 and 4 spd. He thought it was king @#$ untill I raced him with my 67 396 SS 4spd. I probably could have helped him out by towing him instead. haha. The Z was a bit better on the corners though. Kinda relative anyway as Red Lines were not very good on corners on any car.
Gotta admit that the Z did sound good wound up....like a boat with too small of prop.
