302

I had a factory 67 2-bolt main "MO" block 302 engine in my D-gas 42 Stude. The only mods were Duntov 30-30 z-optional cam and Edelbrock Tarantula intake and roller rocker/ stud girdle. This car ran 12.50s spinning the tires hard.If I shifted at anything but 8000 R.P.M. the car slowed down! Very good motor,I wish I still had it,I had all dealership receipts...

halloweenking is wrong

Halloween king is right and wrong on this answer. He is right in the way he says that Chevy made a 5L 305 but he is wrong when he says they didn't make a 302. Chevy made a 302 for the Camero from 66 to 69. It was rated at producing 290 horse power but really created around 375, which is more than the 350. They stopped making them because they didn't have a array of upgrades like the 350 did, and now a days the 350s produce ridiculous amounts of power with the EFI and the large amounts of upgrades that are available that the 302 is unnecessary. Ford is very over rated when it comes to the 302. They didn't make the best 302 ever Chevy did.

First 302 Camaro was 1967, The displacement was a direct result of SCCA rules. The 302 was direct requirement of SCCA Trans AM class racing. Penske Racing and Mark Donahue Z/28 Camaro's ruled the SCCA class. The last 302 was in 1969.

Sorry Mustangiy.......and man is this "302 Chevy" thing gettin beat to death. Yes Chevy made a 302 for the '67-69' Z-28, it was never "blueprinted" to a 305 (?????) by the factory anyway. "and then Ford bought the old 302 design and modified it to their spec" ????? Are you saying Ford bought the Chevy 302 design and modified it to their specs?? If so, NO NO NO NO!

Rocket 350's were Oldsmobiles, the 348 was introduced in '58 and really not that rare, it's big brother the 409 is getting rare. Never heard of "chev 325 heads" and the 312 Ford Y block never came in Falcons. I don't recall for sure if the 312 was even still being made in 1960 when the Falcon was introduced. The biggest V-8 in a Falcon was a 260, can't remember if they ever offered the 289 in the Sprint or not....don't think so. Anyway Welcome to the Forum!

Between 1966-'72 (the end of the musclecar era w/a couple exceptions), Ford won three championships, Chevy two and American Motors two (with Mark Donohue behind the wheel in '71).

Over the years, GM is ahead of FoMoCo by three.

Mark Donohue had three driving championships, Gentilozzi had five, Scott Pruett three, Tommy Kendall four.

Mustangguy, you need to double check those rare Chevrolet engines. Especially the 325 Chevy and the 'Rocket' 350- those engines were so rare, they cast them from nonexistium!

302 bore & stroke
4.00" & 3.00"
305 bore & stroke
3.75" & 3.48

348s were all W engines
Rockets were Olds engines

the chev 302

no they do not make a crate chev 302 DZ. I know i looked everywhere for one and had to buy second hand for my car. The chevy 302 came out first in the trans am races the ford used the 289 in the mustang thats why the mustang never came out with a 302 untill after 69 when chev did away with the 302 and went to the 350/327. Listed in MUSCLE Americas legendary performance cars. A great book to read lots of interesting facts that i didnt know.

My Dad used to race a 68 Z/28 with a 302 back in the very early 70s in north east Ohio.
Super Stock magazine did a feature on it in the Oct 1973 . The article was titled "Z/28 Recordhoarder".

DZ302 Chevy engine

For all you guys that obviously don't have a clue, the 67-69 Camaro Z28's were in fact powered by a chevy 302 V8. These cars were also only available with 4 speed tranny's...no aoutomatics were ever put in a 67-69 Z28 from the factory. You Ford guys ought to read a book before making an *** out of yourself on here about Chevy's bad-*** 302. This engine was rated at 290 hp but actually put out more than 360 hp. While you can no longer buy a "factory" crate 302 from GM, there is a company in Tennessee that builds a Chevy 302 to factory specs. The factory 30-30 cam is also available thru Howards Cams. It's an identicle grind to the Duntov factory cam. By the way Ford guys...visit youtube and check out the 67-69 DZ302 Camaros...your 302 'Stangs from the same years didn't have a chance in hell against one of these.

302

racers have been building 302s way before 1967.In the early 60s a few guys found some 283 blocks that could be bored 125,they were called 301s. 283s that were bored .030 were 287s,.060 were 292s and the 301s were 125 over.Smokey Yunick build a 475 horse power 302 using all GM shelf parts except his own designed intake and headers. Thats a solid lifter cam and none roller rockers.
To build a modern version of a 302 just use a 327/350 block and buy an after market crank. At 1. 5 horse power per cubic inch, which is considered a very stout engine for street use thats normally aspirated,I prefer my 434 over a 302.
If you really want a screaming high rpm mouse,a dart block or equivalent bored 4.155 with a 3 inch stroke will give you 325 cubes.

old thread

who cares how old the thread is? This is a truly fun subject that applies to many enthusiasts that remember when particular engines were considered better engines
